「ある民族の集団で創り出す歌謡には、中心がなく誰かが歌い始め、次に加わる人がその人に合わせるという形で大きくなっていき、誰かが加わることもできるし抜けることもできる、そうして歌謡は明確な起承転結がなくとも、見事に歌い繋がれていく。こうしたコミュニケーションの方法を現代のデジタル情報ネットワークを使って、作り出すことは可能だろうか」（江渡浩一郎）。《SoundCreatures》では、インターネット上でユーザーがサウンドパターンを入力し、会場のインスタレーションにおいて実際に動き回るサウンド・ロボットを介在させることでサウンド要素が交換されていくプロジェクトである。インターネット上のウェブページと会場のどちらからも、サウンド・ロボットの動きとサウンドの変化をリアルタイムに操作、鑑賞することができ、サウンド空間はリアルとヴァーチャルが同時に存在するものとなる。（阿部一直＋四方幸子）

- 会期中、アーティストらが《SoundCreatures》のシステムを操作し、アコースティック楽器奏者を加えた即興ライブを開催。
- 「SoundCreatures on the Web」は、展覧会後にオンライン・バージョンとして制作された。
- 《SoundCreatures》は、Prix Ars Electronica1999のHonorary Mention賞受賞（インタラクティヴ・アート部門）。

「キヤノン・アートラボ」は、科学と芸術の融合による新たなアート領域の創造をめざす実験的な場として1990-2001年に存在したキヤノン株式会社の文化支援プログラム。アーティストとソフトウェア・エンジニアとの約10カ月のコラボレーションによりメディアアートの新作を発表、それらの多くが国内外を巡回、アップグレードも継続的に行った。実施した展覧会は、合計17（企画展10、海外から作品を招聘するプロスペクト展5、オープン・コラボレーション展1、特別展1）。その他にカタログを始めとした出版、シンポジウムやトーク、機器サポート、資金サポートなどを行なった。

“There are folks songs among some ethnic groups in which everyone can start singing and others follow the first singer to gradually develop the chorus. One can participate or quit anytime and these songs are sung on and on without any clear logical development. Is it possible to create such a way of communication through today’s digital information networks?” (Kouichirou Eto). In “SoundCreatures”, sound is communicated on the Internet, in the installation at the exhibition, sound robots move around as agents exchanging such sound elements. Participants can observe and operate realtime the entire movements of the robots and the changes in sound, either on the web page or at the exhibition site.Thus the virtual and the real sound space simultaneously exist. - During the exhibition, the artist and collaborators made an improvisational live by operating “SoundCreatures” system, with an acoustic music player.
- “SoundCreatures on the Web” was developed as online version of “SoundCreatures” after the exhibition.
- “SoundCreatures” received the “Honorary Mention” of Prix Art Electronica (Category: Interactive Art).

Canon ARTLAB (1990-2001) was the cultural support program by Canon Inc., to produce new work of media art by the collaboration between artists and Canon’s computer engineers. ARTLAB produced totally 17 exhibitions and most of the work were further upgraded and toured worldwide. Other activities; publication, symposium and talk, equipment support and financial support.
