アーティストの想像力とエンジニアの技術の融合により、新たなアートの領域の創造と実験を目指したアートラボ発足の最初の企画展として、タイトルをプロジェクト名の「ARTLAB」としている。デジタル・テクノロジーの使用は初めてながら、発想の豊かな展開が予感される20代の新進気鋭の現代美術アーティスト3組とのコラボレーションによるもの。アートラボ・エンジニアのデジタル画像処理技術をベースに、オリジナル・プログラミングによるデジタル・イメージの実験を中心とした。アーティストの選択した表現方法の中に、当時はまだ符丁化されていなかった「インタラクティヴ（双方向）」的要素が、アイデアとして随所に現れている。（阿部一直＋四方幸子）

「キヤノン・アートラボ」は、科学と芸術の融合による新たなアート領域の創造をめざす実験的な場として1990-2001年に存在したキヤノン株式会社の文化支援プログラム。アーティストとソフトウェア・エンジニアとの約10カ月のコラボレーションによりメディアアートの新作を発表、それらの多くが国内外を巡回、アップグレードも継続的に行った。実施した展覧会は、合計17（企画展10、海外から作品を招聘するプロスペクト展5、オープン・コラボレーション展1、特別展1）。その他にカタログを始めとした出版、シンポジウムやトーク、機器サポート、資金サポートなどを行なった。

The first original exhibition since ARTLAB started its activities to aim to create and experiment on a new area of arts, through the fusion of creativity of artists and technology of engineers, is titled “ARTLAB” after the name of the project. ARTLAB collaborated with three groups of artists in their twenties, who have great potentials, through they have little experience of dealing with digital technologies. Experiments on digital images through the original programming, based on the digital image processing technology of ARTLAB, is the central part in the installation. The “interactive” elements, that was not coined yet at the time, are found here and there in the way of expression that the artists chose. (Kazunao Abe + Yukiko Shikata)

Canon ARTLAB (1990-2001) was the cultural support program by Canon Inc., to produce new work of media art by the collaboration between artists and Canon’s computer engineers. ARTLAB produced totally 17 exhibitions and most of the work were further upgraded and toured worldwide. Other activities; publication, symposium and talk, equipment support and financial support.
