メディア・アーティストでありまた建築家であるクリスティアン・メラーは、自らの仕事を「実験的建築」と呼び、電子メディアを介在させ人間とヴァーチャル空間とのインタラクションを作り出すことによって、可動し変容する建築空間を構想していく。メラーの作品では、特別なヴァーチャル・リアリティ装置を用いることなく、建築空間そのものがインターフェイスとなり、観客のリアクション・データが建築空間へとインタラクティブにフィードバックされることで、別の側面の不可視の空間が明らかになってくる。《Virtual Cage》は、人間の動きがきっかけとなって空間全体が変容するメラーの代表的なインタラクティブ作品であるが、今回は会場であるP3の特性を生かし、広範囲な地下空間全体が変容する大規模なインスタレーションとなった。（阿部一直＋四方幸子）

「キヤノン・アートラボ」は、科学と芸術の融合による新たなアート領域の創造をめざす実験的な場として1990-2001年に存在したキヤノン株式会社の文化支援プログラム。アーティストとソフトウェア・エンジニアとの約10カ月のコラボレーションによりメディアアートの新作を発表、それらの多くが国内外を巡回、アップグレードも継続的に行った。実施した展覧会は、合計17（企画展10、海外から作品を招聘するプロスペクト展5、オープン・コラボレーション展1、特別展1）。その他にカタログを始めとした出版、シンポジウムやトーク、機器サポート、資金サポートなどを行なった。

Architect and media artist Christian Moeller calls his works “experimental architecture”, and designs mobile, transformable architectural space by creating interactions between humans and virtual space through electronic media. In his works, a special device for virtual reality is not used, but architectural space itself works as an interface, so that the data of participants’ reactions are interactively transmitted back to the architectural space, and other phases of invisible space come to surface. “Virtual Cage” is one of the major interactive installations by Moeller, in which the whole space changes, triggered by human movements. In this exhibition, the feature of the venue P3 is fully utilized to realize a large-sample installation, in which the whole basement is transformed. (Kazunao Abe + Yukiko Shikata)

- For a special opening event, Belgian saxophonist Eric Sleichim gave a live improvisational performance while trying “BREATH” himself.

Canon ARTLAB (1990-2001) was the cultural support program by Canon Inc., to produce new work of media art by the collaboration between artists and Canon’s computer engineers. ARTLAB produced totally 17 exhibitions and most of the work were further upgraded and toured worldwide. Other activities; publication, symposium and talk, equipment support and financial support.
