- Excerpts of the Hand-out of ‘SYNC - “Maniacs of Disappearance' synchronized”, text by CELL - initiators of incidents, Rotterdam:

From In 1997, Kazunao Abe, Yukiko Shikata and Christophe Charles coupled an exhibition commissioned by The Japan Foundation titled: Maniacs of Disappearance v”. With this they wanted to sketch an outline of artistic expression baby means of video by a contemporary generation of Japanese. CELL - Initiators of Incidents invited this exhibition to the Netherlands and decided to develop a Dutch version thet (in any case formally) would run synchronously to the Japanese part. While selecting the Dutch artists, attention was paid to affinity and contract between these Japanese and Dutch contributions to contemporary visual culture.
Recognizing the danger that with this project magnificent work would be subjected to an egoistic investigation of overzealous exhibition-makers. CELL decided to opt for a compelling installation-form. A form whereby the audience is initially unaware of whose flood of images is sweeping him or her away, bye it Japanese or Dutch…like a billboard one the street that catches an accidental glance, like a television program you end up with whilst zapping that touches you by a chance image, like a multi-user environment where you observe talks of other avatars and where you try to reveal their “true” identity, like a sneak-preview that you enter halfway through and where you persistently wonder which movie it is… whhose… what it is about….., briefly, like one of the forms of contemporary visual culture to which we (outside of the museum walls in any case) are exposed to every day.
