DRIVE
Artist: Jordan Crandall (USA)
Date: May 17 - 28, 2000
Venue: Spiral Garden (Minami-aoyama, Tokyo)
Organizer: ARTLAB, Canon Inc.

In "DRIVE", Jordan Crandall pursues a new way of image expression, poetically blending a variety of image technologies developed in the 20C: e.g. film, video, NightVision, wearable camera, infrared thermal imaging camera, and motion tracking. The meaning of the title "DRIVE" is to set things going or to force someone to do something, and it conveys many other meanings, mechanical, technological, psychological. Crandall tries to present the situation where not only people take the initiate to drive something, but also they are driven by technologies or desire. It means that one's spontaneous act of seeing is no longer a mere act of looking at things. Today's advanced computer networking causes processing between different data, which makes it possible that various visual databases exist behind what we are seeing. Therefore, we do not only pursue symbols before us but look into the "movement", of the world of subjects, based on the relationships of plural networked images. It seems to be a challenge to reflections of presentation and history of mimesis. Conceptual thinking of images, which is cybernetic, is strengthened as images become more mobile, layered, linked with networks and databases, and expand the sensory system of a body.
