In “Where Is Our Place?” The Kabakovs have constructed three views of art and the world, in gigantic, actual and miniature sizes to evoke the art of the past, present and future. Entering the gallery, visitors are confronted with the enormous legs of 19th-century people who appear to be viewing huge classic paintings. These grand masterpieces, hung in heavy gilt frames, are so large that they penetrate and disappear through the ceiling. Also in the gallery is a series of photographs of normal scale that depict Soviet era Russia and are exhibited with flowery lines of poetry in simple wooden frames. Visitors will also discover a surprisingly tiny world embedded under Plexiglas along the edge of the gallery floor - a miniature universe filled with mountains and fields. Walking through the exhibition space, visitors find themselves either dwarfed or transformed into giants and must constantly change their posture accordingly, looking up or crouching down to view the varying scales of the exhibition. These fundamental juxtapositions - large and small, old and new, strange and familiar - compel visitors to reflect upon their own perspective and place in the world. The Kabakovs create seemingly effortless and yet extremely precise “total installations“, utilizing paintings, sculptures, texts and memories of everyday life. In this environment, where time, objects, light, color and sound collide and everything is relative, visitors have the opportunity to consider who they are and their own place in the world.
